November 2, 2009
Washington, D.C. – On Monday, November 2, 2009 AIMS leaders, Dr. Steve Dawson, Dr. Gerry Moses, and Dr. Mark Scerbo along with AIMS staff met with Dr. Carolyn Clancy, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). In the productive meeting, AIMS shared with Dr. Clancy its goals to increase federal support for medical simulation training and research. AHRQ is the lead agency that will oversee the federal grant process established by the Enhancing SIMULATION Act of 2009 if enacted into law. Dr. Clancy expressed her support for the bill and agreed that the legislation would be a positive step forward in health care.
Dr. Clancy asked the AIMS team very important questions about the legislation, the implementation process, and specifically about the Federal Medical Simulation Coordinating Council established by the bill. She agreed that a Coordinating Council was a good idea in order to oversee medical simulation efforts in various government agencies, and especially for the civilian health care arena to learn from the simulation efforts already well-established within the Department of Defense.
Following the meeting with Dr. Clancy, on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 AIMS leaders Dr. Steve Dawson and Dr. Mark Scerbo, and AIMS staff met with Dr. Mary Wakefield at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Dr. Wakefield and her staff also expressed interest in the AIMS efforts, citing a need to focus medical education training more on medical simulation. Dr. Wakefield mentioned that they work closely with AHRQ and Dr. Clancy on implementation measures and that certainly, this legislation would fit well into that relationship.
Dr. Wakefield’s staff said that HRSA was very interested in curriculum development and would work closely with AHRQ to coordinate this effort. They also mentioned that interprofessional training was an important focus for the agency, something that medical simulation-based training definitely promotes.
AIMS was very pleased to have the opportunity to meet with these two distinguished administrators and to share with them the AIMS agenda. AIMS continues to work to advance the Enhancing SIMULATION Act of 2009 by adding cosponsors and communicating with the lead sponsors in the House and Senate about moving the bill along in the legislative process.
